Supply Chain Salaries Keep Pace

Toronto – Supply chain salaries edged up 2.2 percent in the past year as Canada’s economy continues to pull out of recession. The average wage reported in the 2011 Purchasing Management Association of Canada/Purchasingb2b/MM&D Salary Survey was $82,800, up from last year’s $81,000.

The gender gap has declined slightly from 31.3 percent in 2010 to an 18.4-percent disparity between male and female earnings this year. That’s an average salary of $88,300 for men versus $74,600 for women.

The differential between remuneration for those with a professional designation and those without continues to be significant. The average salary of respondents with an SCMP designation was $93,800 this year. Those without the designation who now are enrolled in the SCMP accreditation program earned, on average, $69,200.

“Our annual salary survey continues to provide tangible evidence of the SCMP designation’s value and the return on investment its holders receive in the labour market", says Cheryl Paradowski, president and CEO of the Purchasing Management Association of Canada (PMAC). "It is also encouraging to see the disparity between male and female earnings moving in the right direction, but the gap remains too large. Hopefully by bringing this discrepancy to the forefront in our survey results, we can contribute towards its ultimate eradication."

Other findings include:

• All regions except Quebec and Ontario saw a salary increase this year. British Columbia was the principal gainer with an increase of 9.8 percent to $81,700, followed by Alberta with a 5.9 percent increase to $98,700.
• Salaries are highest in Alberta, followed by Ontario, British Columbia and Manitoba/Saskatchewan.
• The wage disparity between men and women with 16 to 20 years of experience continues to be the largest at 20 percent, but the discrepancy has declined from last year’s 41.7 percent. The gap is smallest (5.8 percent) in the group with six to 10 years of work experience.
• Government sector salaries saw the largest jump, with the average climbing from $75,100 to $80,500. This was followed by trade/wholesale sector wages which grew from $76,400 to $80,500.

The online survey was conducted in June and July 2011 by the Rogers Business and Professional Publishing Research Group. A total of 1,567 respondents from the PMAC membership and from the MM&D and Purchasingb2b readership completed the survey.
