2009 Sustainable Procurement Showcase
Close to 200 supply chain management professionals attended two free sessions, sponsored by Grand & Toy, in Vancouver and Toronto in November, where they learned about the growth in demand for green procurement practices and how buying green can actually drive down total costs.

A recent survey by environmental marketing agency TerraChoice, which included PMAC members, found that almost 3/4 of companies have some type of green procurement policy. TerraChoice CEO Scott McDougall reassured attendees that green procurement is not merely a passing notion, but a new reality for business. “Green is here to stay, it has taken hold, and it has proven to be recession-proof,” he stated.
Participants heard John Scheel, Vice-President, Supply Chain, Grand & Toy, describe the company’s sustainability journey and how it recently changed its next-day delivery policy. A surprising 68% of customers, in some areas, now opt for 48-hour delivery, allowing Grand & Toy to reduce the number of trucks it has on the road each day.

Keynote speaker Bruce Lourie, co-author of the best-selling book Slow Death by Rubber Duck, said that consumer awareness of the green movement is at “unprecedented heights,” producing significant shifts in everything from corporate behaviour to government policy.
As the leading association for supply chain management in Canada, PMAC, through its thought leadership, education programs and Professional Code of Ethics, encourages its members to recognize their responsibility to environmental issues.
As a corporate leader Grand & Toy believes it is their responsibility to move towards a business-leading commitment to sustainability that inevitably will inspire change within the marketplace.
